Unfortunately the waters of Bantry Bay are far from being pristine. A new major salmon farm at Trafrask, Adrigole, would only add substantially to the environmental impact. In the wake of the Whiddy Island Desaster in 1979 the Bay had to fight a long struggle to ecological recovery. Today the working bay suffers from heavy pollution caused by fish farming, mussel farming and irresponsible householders. A number of beaches in Bantry Bay are in a state of devastation. The following photos were taken in January and February 2012 at Gearies (Sheep´s Head), Ballylickey (Eagle Point) and Glengarriff (Ardaturrish More). Irrespective of other major impact of fish feed, pharmaceuticals and chemicals more than 500,000 salmons at Shot Head would produce sewage equivalent to the output of a town bigger than Bantry or Castlewonbere together.
